WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME you took a moment to travel down memory lane? Pretended that you were a pirate in search of a hidden treasure? Became a kid again?
When I found out that I would be going to the Galt Museum & Archives to do a story for Lethbridge living, I knew that I would be in for an adventure–especially when I also learned that my husband, a.k.a. the history nut, and I would both have the chance to view the collections with Curator, Wendy Aitkens. Wendy explained to us that the museum was in the process of putting together its upcoming Treasures & Curiosities exhibit, and that all the items in the exhibit will have been selected by staff, volunteers and members of the community, including the two choices we would be making that day. Seldom seen by the public, except when part of an exhibit, and numbering over 20,000, the artifacts are housed in the basement of the Galt Museum. In a letter of invitation, individuals were asked to make an appointment to meet with a staff member or volunteer in order to make their selections for the exhibit. With the use of the classification guide, a historical association was selected and then the search refined by choosing a subject. Once we narrowed down our own selections, Wendy took us on our treasure hunt and led us to where the items from our pared-down lists could be found. Had we not had a limited time frame the day of our appointment, I am sure we could have spent an entire day with Wendy marvelling at all of the bits and pieces. We looked at some amazing jewellery, antique prints and even a lapel pin from the early establishment of Taiwan. We each selected two items that we found significant and meaningful, and were asked to write a short paragraph explaining why we chose the things we did. Wendy also explained that probably only one of the two items selected would be chosen for the exhibit since limited space is available.
