1923 was a good year for beginnings–Time Magazine hit newsstands for the first time, Yankee Stadium opened its doors in the Bronx, the late Queen Mother got married, and the Playgoers Club of Lethbridge was formed.

EIGHTY-SEVEN YEARS LATER, Playgoers is busy preparing its next production, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, and still fulfilling its original mandate: To advance, encourage, and promote the enjoyment of theatre arts.

It Takes Two...

SOME MIGHT SAY IT WAS AN EPIPHANY. In the fall of 2007 Teacher Michelle Dimnik, while skimming through Reading Today, an American bi-monthly newspaper for literacy professionals, chanced upon an article with a four-word headline: “One School, One Book.” She read the story and had a sudden realization. She took the newspaper and a proposal to her Principal, Bill Bartlett of Dr. Gerald B. Probe Elementary School. He signed on, and the school has not been the same since.

It’s Going to be a Really Big Show

ARTSTAGE IS BACK, and the curtain rises on Act II of the popular Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge’s (AAC) fundraiser at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16, at the Yates Memorial Centre. “ArtStage provides the community with a creative showcase of mostly pre-professional and professional artists they might not otherwise be aware of. The inaugural event went over very well. So, this is our second year,” explains Lindsay Meli, Communications Co-ordinator for the AAC.

IMAGINE IT’S A FRIDAY or Saturday evening. It’s 2010 and the fifth or sixth of, yes, February; one of those months that seems to linger between Christmas and spring, but we have left all sense of that nondescript season outside. Inside, the Sterndale Bennett Theatre has become a cabaret. The space feels intimate, and the music that fills it is taking us away.
